Dos hermanos, jóvenes investigadores de historia, se proponen indagar las oscuras razones que motivaron el Auto de Fe dictado por la Inquisición contra un beaterio de beguinas (mujeres cristianas que desde el siglo XII ocupan su vida en ayudar a los desamparados) en la ciudad de Brujas a comienzos del siglo XVII, en un momento en el que la ciudad se halla involucrada en el sitio de Ostende, por su proximidad con ésta. Atando cabos y escrutando viejos manuscritos, el mayor de los hermanos cree haber descubierto el secreto que se encierra entre las paredes del Beguinato de Brujas: bajo la sumisa apariencia de las hermanas, que se ocupan en hacer el bien, parece existir un pacto no escrito entre ellas, que será el objeto de esta novela. La narración avanza en paralelo: la investigación y los hechos acaecidos van in crescendo hasta confluir en un final descubrimiento de la trama. Este libro es también el proceso de reconstrucción de unos acontecimientos acaecidos en 1604 y su conversión en una narración apasionante y verosímil.
